Chronic Illness & Trauma-Informed Care
Navigating the Intersection of Physical Health and Mental Well-being
If you are living with a chronic illness, you likely already know that your condition doesn't just affect your body. It impacts your relationships, your career, your sense of self, and your hopes for the future. You may have spent years navigating a medical system that often fails to see the whole person, perhaps feeling gaslit or dismissed while managing symptoms that feel like a full-time job.
At Artemis Behavioral Health, we believe that dark trails always feel safer with a guide. We specialize in helping adults who are seeking to understand the deep, often complex connection between traumatic experiences and autoimmunity or chronic illness symptoms. Our practice is built on the foundation of delivering LGBTQIA+ inclusive, disability-affirming, and trauma-informed care. Whether you are dealing with POTS, rheumatoid arthritis, Ehler’s Danlos syndrome, long COVID, chronic pain, or undiagnosed autoimmune struggles, you are in the right place.
Why Chronic Illness Requires a Specialized Approach
Managing a chronic condition is a unique form of trauma. It involves the grief of losing the version of yourself that felt "healthy," the anxiety of unpredictable flare-ups, and the exhaustion of keeping "55 tabs open" in your brain just to survive the day. Standard talk therapy often misses the mark because it fails to address the neurobiological impact of illness.
At Artemis, we don't just "chat." We help your nervous system finally feel like it’s allowed to rest. Our mission is to bridge the gap between mind and body using evidence-based techniques rooted in neurobiology. We focus on your physical "window of tolerance," ensuring that our therapeutic interventions support your healing without causing further depletion.
Our Therapeutic Modalities
We offer a custom approach for each of our clients, starting with a deep understanding of where you are now and the specific challenges your body is facing. Our clinicians are trained in specialized modalities that are particularly effective for chronic illness and medical trauma.
1. Somatic Interventions & Neurobiology
Chronic illness often leaves the body in a state of high alert—a constant "fight or flight" response. We use somatic interventions to help you reconnect with your body in a way that feels safe. By understanding the neurobiology of your symptoms, we can work together to lower the baseline of distress your nervous system carries.
2. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
Medical procedures, scary diagnoses, and years of physical pain can result in medical PTSD. We utilize EMDR to process these target events, helping to reduce the distress associated with your medical history. This allows you to approach your ongoing healthcare needs with more resilience and a greater sense of calm.
3. Internal Family Systems (IFS)
Living with illness often creates "parts" of us—the part that is angry at the body, the part that is terrified of the future, and the part that tries to overthink its way to relief. IFS-informed sessions allow us to map these parts and build a compassionate relationship with yourself, which is essential for long-term chronic illness management.
4. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
When your body feels like it’s being chased by a bear, you need concrete tools to stay grounded. Our DBT-focused work emphasizes distress tolerance and emotional regulation, helping you manage the interpersonal challenges and behavioral urges that arise when physical symptoms are at their peak.
5. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
We explore how your thoughts, body sensations, and emotions interact. By identifying negative cognitions related to your illness, we can develop new skills to better cope with functional limitations and stress.
A Creative & Affirming Environment
We know that a sterile, clinical environment can be triggering for those who have spent too much time in doctors' offices. You are going to love our space in Williamsville. It is designed to be a safe and cozy sanctuary where you can work on the issues with the deepest roots.
Our sessions are as unique as you are. For those who adore creativity, we offer unusual ways to approach therapy, including:
-
Animal-Assisted Therapy: Utilizing the calming presence of animals to support nervous system regulation.
-
Arts and Crafts: Using creative expression to process what words cannot.
-
Tarot Cards: Offering a symbolic lens to explore your journey.
-
Support & Activity Groups: We plan to expand into trauma-informed yoga and support groups to build community among those with similar lived experiences.
Inclusive and Accessible Care
Artemis Behavioral Health is a woman-owned business committed to maintaining a culturally competent and accessible environment.

Meet Your Guide
The practice was founded by Katie Oberg, MSW, LCSW, a social worker and therapist who specializes in the intersection of chronic illness and PTSD. Katie's vision was to create a practice where specialized clinicians provide high-quality, evidence-based care while prioritizing the individual needs and caseload health of both the therapist and the client.
Our team is expanding to include clinicians who share this passion for trauma-informed, disability-affirming care. We believe that everyone already possesses the strength they need to heal, but having a guide who truly understands the complexities of chronic illness makes the journey safer and more manageable.
